چکیده

Researchers in the field of biocomputing have, for many years, successfully “harvested and exploited” the natural world for inspiration in developing systems that are robust, adaptable and capable of generating novel and even “creative” solutions to humandefined problems. However, in this position paper we argue that the time has now come for a reassessment of how we exploit biology to generate new computational systems. Previous solutions (the “first generation” of biocomputing techniques), whilst reasonably effective, are crude analogues of actual biological systems. We believe that a new, inherently inter-disciplinary approach is needed for the development of the emerging “second generation” of bio-inspired methods. This new modus operandi will require much closer interaction between the engineering and life sciences communities, as well as a bidirectional flow of concepts, applications and expertise. We support our argument by

Assaying Vandevelde’s Approach to Gadamer

The purpose of this paper is to look at four important aspects of Vandevelde’s criticisms of Gadamer. First is his position on Gadamer’s claim that his hermeneutics is a “philosophical hermeneutics” and not a methodology. Second is Vandevelde’s view of interpretation as necessarily going back to the author’s intention, and the status of the “mental state” of the author. Is it relevant to int...

Open Science: Tools, Approaches, and Implications

Open Science is gathering pace both as a grass roots effort amongst scientists to enable them to share the outputs of their research more effectively, and as a policy initiative for research funders to gain a greater return on their investment. In this workshop, we will discuss the current state of the art in collaborative research tools, the social challenges facing those adopting and advocati...

Protein disorder and the evolution of molecular recognition: theory, predictions and observations.

Observations going back more than 20 years show that regions in proteins with disordered backbones can play roles in their binding to other molecules; typically, the disordered regions become ordered upon complex formation. Thought-experiments with Schulz Diagrams, which are defined herein, suggest that disorder-to-order transitions are required for natural selection to operate separately on af...

The school of traditional Iranian medicine: The definition, origin and advantages

Traditional Iranian Medicine (TIM) consists of the sum total of all the knowledge and practices used in Persia from ancient times to now, from generation to generation relying exclusively on practical experience and observation handed down from generation to generation. TIM roots go back to over 2000 years ago and It is not too bold to go even further and claim that the Persians taught the Gree...
